Penguins: Game 3 Notes

  • This team is a legitimate cup contender with or without Crosby and I say that with 100% certainty. Playing three games in four days, against Western Conference foes, on the road, in each team's home opener, the Penguins still managed five out of a maximum six points. You could look at it as a positive that they got to play each of them in the other team's first time out, but in any team's home opener, the buzz is electric and the Penguins responded masterfully.
  • Speaking of Crosby, when he makes his return, he will make this team that much better. I said this at the end of last season, but I've never been so hyped about a team's new season. The Steelers and Penguins have had plenty of good teams, but this is the most sure I've been that one of those teams would make a deep playoff run assuming Crosby gets back and stays back. And even then, I'm pretty darn confident.
  • The Penguins could probably start carrying some extra forwards and scratch a couple of defensemen. Did Kris Letang even come off the ice yesterday? He's played incredibly, and I'm not normally one to say a guy shouldn't do something if he can, but Letang should probably shave a few minutes off of his ice time to ensure he'll stay fresh for the stretch run at the end. I'm not overly concerned, but I am just a little bit.
