Phillies Are National League's Yankees

Because this is much easier than writing a whole new article, here is part of a conversation from my personal Facebook account. It stems from a much longer convo, but this is the main point I wanted to relay:

Phillies Fan: Difference between yankees and phillies, we won the series with homegrown talent. Yankees buy everyone elses stars. If the pirates wanted to win they would pay their players and keep their stars.

My response:  http://zellspinstripeblog.com/2009/08/02/the-yanks-have-homegrown-players/

I hate the freaking Yankees, but stop making arguments on perception and do some homework. In 2009 when the Yankees last won the series 56% of their players were homegrown. 1st in the American League. Meanwhile the loser Phillies had just 32% of their players homegrown as you can see in the link above. Which tied them for 10th in the National League.

While I can't find the 2008 numbers, I assume that they aren't too far off base with this. So your argument that you won with homegrown guys and they didn't is 200% false.

While I will admit that the number of homegrown players for the Phillies now is significantly higher, it still fits right into the "teams with more money always win" argument. You can't retain valuable homegrown talent if you can't pay them. 5 years from now Howard, Victorino, Utley, Worley, etc. will mostly ALL be with the Phillies. Meanwhile I just hope the Pirates keep at least ONE of the Tabata, Alvarez, McCutchen, and Walker group in that same 5 year time frame.

And stop with the "Pirates need to spend more money" bullshit. Small cities don't have the money. Pittsburgh has 330,000+ people. Philly has 1,400,000+ people. That's why they can spend money and the Pirates can't.

So stop with the nonsense. You have an advantage. There is no doubt about it. Stop making excuses and embrace it. If Phillies, Yankees, and Red Sox fans just said "Well yeah, money won us games" the facts don't change, [and] at least you'll stop sounding like hypocritical morons.

Pittsburgh Will Always Top Philadelphia

Relax Philadelphia fans. No need to get your panties in a bunch. The above picture is in no way meant to say the Pirates are better than the Phillies. It's actually to say that all Pittsburgh sports are better than all Philadelphia sports.

Ok. Now you can go ahead and bunch up those panties again.

A recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling asked which professional sports team in Pennsylvania was the voter's favorite. They gathered these results:
The Steelers are Pennsylvania's favorite professional sports team. 30% of voters in the state pick them, followed by 22% for the Phillies, 12% each for the Penguins and Eagles, 6% for the Pirates, 4% for the Flyers, and 2% for the 76ers. For those keeping track that's 48% of voters in the state choosing one of Pittsburgh's 3 teams to only 40% picking a Philadelphia team even though that city has 4. Advantage Steel City on that front.
Even with one less team in the state, Pittsburgh teams still earned 8% more of the vote than Philadelphia.

What's stunning to me is that our hockey team tied their beloved football team, and our baseball team and its 18 consecutive losing seasons ranked higher than their hockey team that was coming off a Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

Now just heap this onto Pittsburgh's title dominance, (World Series: Pirates 5, Phillies 2; Stanley Cups: Penguins 3, Flyers 2; and my favorite Super Bowls: Steelers 6, Eagles 0) and there's no argument left about which side of the state rules Pennsylvania.

And if you aren't one of the 2%, please don't bring up the Sixers, because literally nobody cares.

Homeruns Don't Matter at PNC Park

The idea for this blog was taken from pittplank.com, an affiliate of espn.com.

Using a very nifty tool from the people at katron.org we can place a player's hits from any ballpark into another ballpark to see how it may change the outcome. For instance:

All of the dark blue dots are homeruns, the light blue dots are doubles, and the orange dots are fly outs. The dots are Aramis Ramirez' hits this season at Wrigley Field. Those dots have been placed onto PNC Park. So, as you can see, Ramirez has 12 homeruns at his home ballpark of Wrigley, but at most 2 would be homeruns at PNC.

Pirates Mixed Bag: Pirates Need Upgrade, Overbay's Time Finally Up?, Rough Trade Market

Yet again we start with a post from Bob Smizik's blog on post-gazette.com. This is just the latest of his daily "we need a trade" updates. It's not necessarily getting old though, and that's probably not a good thing:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29592-pirates-easily-to-upgrade-just-do-it

The first post from Paul Zeise of the Post-Gazette here on Jolly Roger Sports. The guy has no idea what he's talking about unless the topic is the University of Pittsburgh, but the guy can certainly fake it with his writing abilitiy. This one is about Lyle Overbay's final days here in the Burgh:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11210/1163738-63.stm

Dejan Kovacevic of the Tribune-Review reported yesterday that the Pirates made a "hard" push for Carlos Beltran. His belief is that the Bucs are doing their best, but just can't find a fit. His final sentiments: Trying isn't good enough:
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_748977.html

Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated wrote yet another fine piece on the Pirates:

Pirates Mixed Bag: Opinions on Pirates Deadline Options, Pirates Wanted Beltran, A New View on Viewing Sports

All three articles today come from the Tribune-Review. This probably won't occur too often again, but they were on top of things more than others today.

A few notes before we get to the articles:
1. It looks like Carlos Pena is out of the running to join the Pirates. As I've said, I wasn't too high on him anyway, but he could only make us better.
2. Jason Kubel is the new name being thrown around. I must admit that I am very on board with this. He's a very good player who the Pirates may be able to keep long-term.
3. Jamey Carroll's name is also out there, but I don't see him being a huge addition. If we could get a Kubel or Upton first, I'd be much happier than just him alone. I'd settle for him if we could lock him up for a few years, but he isn't going to do enough this year.

Pirates Mixed Bag: Jerry Meals, Jerry Meals, and Some Feel Good Pirates Stories

At 2 o' clock in the morning, after almost seven hours of gameplay, I watched my favorite baseball team lose a game on a call heard round the world. Jerry Meals will always be remembered now... and that's the worst thing that can happen to a major league umpire.

I can't say the guy doesn't deserve everything he gets. He obviously wanted to beat the early morning traffic home. How else do you explain him inexplicacly calling Julio Lugo safe at home, after Michael McKenry applied a tag five feet in front of home plate?

I've watched baseball for a long time and suffered through over 100 games a season (even I couldn't watch them all) of Pirates' baseball for years and years, and I've never seen a runner called safe at any base when the ball beats him to the bag... whether he was tagged or not! I do believe the right call needs to be made, but let's just say he missed him for grins and giggles. The ball was so far in front of Lugo that he had to be called out. Even if he was wrong, not a single person would be discussing it today.

But here we are, and Jerry Meals name is synonomous with baseball umpiring failures right next to Jim Joyce. Here's to hoping Meals admits his fault and explains why he actually made that call. It would be much more noble than the nonsensical excuse he tried to pull so far.

Here's the rest of the best on last night's loss:

Matt Popchock's Pittsburgh Power Awards

Fourteen Pirates Talking Points

I enjoyed doing this the first time around, so I've decided to do it again. These are fourteen questions posed by Bob Smizik on his blog on post-gazette.com. This column may become a regular if Mr. Smizik makes it a regular thing. Enjoy!

Monday, July 25, 2011

Pirates Mixed Bag: Buster Olney on the Bucs, Differing Views on Huntington's Deadline Approach, Pirates Perennial Trade Deadline Winners?

Let me start off by saying Pedro Alvarez is back in the big leagues. That is all.

First, we have an interview Buster Olney of ESPN did with Joe Giardina of the Pittsburgh Sports Report. It doesn't really tell us anything new, but it's Buster Olney so I had to get it on the blog:
http://www.pittsburghsportsreport.com/PSR/node/2561

Next, we have a post from Bob Smizik's blog on post-gazette.com. He suggests that the Pirates' window of opportunity may be shut before it really even opens and the Bucs need to make a deal now:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29523-pressure-is-on-huntington

And of course we have a fitting column from Ron Cook of the Post-Gazette who thinks the complete opposite of Smizik. Cook preaches patience in making a deal and thinks general manager Neal Huntington is going about the deadline perfectly:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11206/1162776-87-0.stm

And last we have a very interesting article out of the New York Post by Joel Sherman. Sherman thinks the Pirates have done a great job at the deadline from 2008-2010, rating them as "winners" purely on deadline deals:

Pittsburgh Power Season in Review

It was an extremely up and down season for the expansion Pittsburgh Power, and it unfortunately ended on a down note, but I can't imagine one year can get much more exciting than the one that concluded Friday.

Bucs Need Pedro, But Fans Need to Relax

Fans are jumping off the Pirates bandwagon faster than they jumped on and that new found trust in the front office has just about dwindled down to nothing.

Out With the Old #4, In With the New #4: Brett Favre to Eagles?

With #4 Kevin Kolb all but finished in the "city of brotherly love," it appears the Eagles will attempt to coax Brett Favre out of retirement yet again to backup Michael Vick for the 2011-2012 season. Here's the link to the original article:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/126073623.html

I think this may be more wishful thinking on the part of the Eagles and their fans than anything else, but this would certainly consume much of the sports world for the entire preseason, if not longer. Even if Favre publicly says it is false, we all know how Favre's sagas work by now.

So why would Favre come back to the NFL especially as a backup? The lure of another championship could do the trick. Which, of course, eliminates the Eagle's chances of signing him.

A Pirates Article on CNN! We've Gone Global!

Steelers Mixed Bag: Polamalu "Mane" Priority, Harrison Wrong About Roethlisberger

Dejan Kovacevic of the Trib thinks the Steelers should make Troy Polamalu a top priority when the lockout ends:
http://pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_747918.html

Kerry J. Byrne of Sports Illustrated tells us that the biggest travesty of James Harrison's comments may have been what nobody noticed - Big Ben is just as good, if not better, than Peyton Manning. This is a humbling look of the most underrated quarterback in years:

Pirates Mixed Bag: Judging the Pirates, Mike McKenry's Success, Carlos Beltran to the Burgh?

I have a huge bag of Pirates' goodies today and I'm sure more will be coming tomorrow. The trade deadline is heating up and rumors continue to swirl so there is quite a bit of information out there on that front. Then there's tons of great articles on the current Pirates as they stand right now. I wouldn't post them if they weren't good so if you're a fan, read them all.

1. Bob Smizik of the Post-Gazette lays a huge wake-up call on Bucco fans. I very much agree with him, but putting a damper on the Carlos Beltran pursuit, illegitimate as it may be, is not cool. Let us enjoy this, we don't get to do it too often:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29507-could-we-wait-until-july-31-before-pronouncing-judgment-on-pirates

2. Even after Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com guessed that Carlos Beltran will be traded to the Pirates, the news hasn't been promising. Here is probably the best assessment of where the Pirates stand in the Beltran sweepstakes. This comes from Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/jon_heyman/07/20/carlos.beltran/index.html

3. Here is Smizik again with some fun tidbits about the Pirates. Actually this one is somewhat of wake-up call to Pirates' fans as well especially to those who dislike Jose Veras for whatever God forsaken reason...:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29492-time-to-spend-some-money

4. This is my first Gene Collier repost, but it certainly won't be my last. As always, Collier, of the Post-Gazette, provides a fact-filled and humorous take on the success the Pirates have had with Michael McKenry behind the plate:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11202/1161894-150-0.stm

5. Last we have Joe Starkey of the Tribune-Review and an interesting article about "Moneyball." Especially the comparison of Neal Huntington to Billy Beane:
http://pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_747709.html

Bonus: The Trib's Dejan Kovacevic's weekly chat transcript. Always worth a view:

CM Punk and the Best Entrances of All-Time

For anyone that clicked on this saying, "A wrestling article. WTF?!?!?!" let me say that professional wrestling is very much a sport (even if I do sometimes question the abilities of the most recent batch of "superstars"). That's an article for another day. Here's an article for today though. Bill Simmons of ESPN and of his new website Grantland.com talks about the recent CM Punk storyline and some of the greatest theme musics in wrestling history:

Most Power Players Will Be Back

Chris Siegfried and Lynn Swann will likely be partners for quite a while

One of the things that makes Arena Football tough to watch for a lot of people is the amount of turnover from year to year or even from week to week. So today we had some good news for Power fans as coach Chris Siegfried is expecting at least 17 players to come back for next season. While the Power had a disappointing ending to their year, injuries were the main culprit, causing the Power to use an abnormally high number of different players while key starters had to watch from the benches. If the core group returns healthy the Power should return to their midseason winning ways if you ask me. Here's the full article from Jerry DiPaola of the Tribune-Review:

Pirates Mixed Bag: The Time is Now for Carlos Pena, Pitching Only Getting Better, Players Welcome Trade

Bob Smizik of the Post-Gazette is of the thinking that the Pirates shouldn't sit around and wait for Carlos Pena. If they're gonna do it, do it now. I have to admit I'm starting to fall for Pena now that I'm realizing Garrett Jones will not be a part of the Pirates future and there isn't too much else out there that the Bucs can realistically get. Anyway, here's the article:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29481-carlos-pena-the-time-is-now

The Pirates pitching has been incredible and it continues to get better. This is the one part of the team that I have bought into even if I am still on the fence about their hitters. This article about that very topic also comes from Mr. Smizik:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29480-pitching-gets-better-and-better

Dejan Kovacevic of the Tribune Review suggests that while the Pirates feel they can win with what they have, they will welcome a move to help the team now with open arms:

Steelers One of the Teams to Beat in 2014

ESPN did a little polling of NFL "experts" and they determined that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be in the running for team-to-beat from 2014-2016. Three experts chose the Steelers, while the Green Bay Packers led the way with six. You can view all of the selections here: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6769936/consensus-packers-own-2014-16

James Walker, AFC North blogger for ESPN, was given the task of choosing the division front-runner in that same time-frame and called it a toss-up between the Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens. You can view his post here: http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/29460/afc-north-dominant-team-2014-16

A little bonus for you. Foxsports.com is running a poll on which player was the best for each team. I'm not really sure why they're doing this, but if you want to have a say and haven't already you can click here: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Vote-for-the-greatest-Steeler-070111

National Media's Coverage of Pirates = Boring

Chase d'Arnaud's hustle play in Monday night's ballgame won the Pirates the ballgame... and just one blog post even touched on it. That's just one of the many topics to talk about when it comes to the Bucs.

The Pirates need to make a trade.

The Pirates aren't that good.

More fans are coming to PNC Park.

More Pirates merchandise is selling.

The Pirates are in first place.

If you've read an article about the Pittsburgh Pirates lately, there's a great chance that one of these things listed above is what you've read about.

Twelve Pirates Talking Points

Here are twelve questions posed by Bob Smizik on his blog on postgazette.com (Original Post). So I've decided to answer them all for your benefit.

A Post for the "Real" Pirates' Fans

While it's understandable why people would jump off the Pirates' ship, or bandwagon if you will, a lot of talk has come up about how the fans that stuck with the team should react to these people rushing back on deck. Well, instead of wondering if we should make those "fans" walk the plank, Dejan Kovacevic suggests that the fair-weathered fans should tip their caps to those who stuck it out in his article for the Tribune-Review.

Pirates Eyeing Josh Willingham. Why?

Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that the Pirates are looking at a potential trade to bring Oakland A's outfielder Josh Willingham to Pittsburgh. (Buster Olney's Twitter Post)

I'm still trying to figure out why.

Pirates Mixed Bag: Pirates Earning Respect, Who Replaces Whom, Pirates Better Off Selling?

The first article highlights other players' feelings on the Bucs and what they are accomplishing. Bill Brink, Post-Gazette:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11198/1160705-63.stm

The second discusses what will happen when players return from injury. Bob Smizik, Post-Gazette:
http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/29452-pirates-who-will-replace-whom

And finally, something that no Pirates fan wants to hear: The Pirates should be sellers. I'm not sure how much credibility this national writer has when he says, "The team has also been very healthy... A lot of things have simply gone very well for the Pirates." Maybe he should watch a game before he judges. In any case here's the link. Joe Sheehan, Sports Illustrated:

Steelers Outlaws of the NFL

Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and host of the drive home show on 93.7 The Fan, writes a fantastic article about the Pittsburgh Steelers off-the-field woes. I am inclined to disagree with some of his opinions, but all-in-all I think it's an enjoyable piece:

Another Overblown Steelers Story

While I will admit that the Pittsburgh Steelers have had far too many public relations troubles in recent years, people, particularly the media, are making a big deal out of the most ridiculous events.

Plan B for Retiring #21

Dejan Kovacevic of the Trib wrote an article suggesting that the Clemente family has a plan in the works to retire Roberto's jersey. I have to admit, I think it's an extraordinary idea, and retiring the number is long overdue.

Pirates Trade Deadline Options

If you didn't believe me, Bob Smizik of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette shares my view of the team almost verbatim in a blog post late last night. The main difference is that I think Lyle Overbay keeps the first base job because of Clint Hurdle's obvious reluctance to give Garrett Jones a full time starting gig.

Week 19 AFL American Conference Playoff Picture

The Power had a blatantly uninspired performance against the league's best. The Arizona Rattlers jumped on turnovers early and used them to start their blowout victory over the Power 68-34 in maybe the worst game the Power have played all season. Because of the Cleveland Gladiators' loss to the Philadelphia Soul on Friday night, the Power had much less to play for and they showed it. Bernard Morris overthrew receivers constantly and opened up questions about his health yet again. The offensive line didn't help Morris at all and kept him running for his life all day. The defense couldn't get any pressure on Rattlers' QB Nick Davila and the secondary was porous. New defensive backs Durrell Oliver and Bryan Williams were horrible, but the biggest letdown was the number of offsides penalties against the Power. Terrance Carter and the gang to need to step back, regroup, and focus, and get ready to make a run at the postseason. The Power, for all intents and purposes, need to win out to make the playoffs and it starts Friday against the division leading Gladiators (8:00 P.M., NFL Network).

The Jacksonville Sharks locked up the number one seed weeks ago so here is what the other contenders' schedules look like heading into Week 19 and how they can clinch a playoff berth:

News Flash! Pittsburgh is a Baseball Town

Even guys like Matt Morris could never deter our love for the Buccos

"When is training camp starting?" I have to admit, it's very refreshing to not have hard that once this summer even in jest. The Pittsburgh Pirates are just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central division and even if baseball fans in general haven't noticed, you can rest assured that the fans in Pittsburgh have. This city has a buzz around it like none I've ever seen. A Steelers Super Bowl appearance or a Penguins Stanley Cup Final appearance can't even compare to what's going on right now in the Steel City.

Critics have said that the Pirates lost a generation of baseball fans during their nineteen years as the perennial laughing stock of Major League Baseball, but it has been quite the contrary... as if there were any question.

How Long Will Some Pirates be Pirates?

How long will Alex Presley be a Pirate?

The Indianapolis Indians, err, Pittsburgh Pirates continued their winning ways heading into the All-Star break despite using several players that started the season in the minor leagues. Unfortunately decisions will need to me made, many of which will be coming this month.

Besides a trade, the Pirates have several playing time dilemmas to deal with. Here is a position-by-position breakdown and my prediction on how it will play out:

There's Room for Three Teams in Pittsburgh... and a Bigger Bat for the Bucs

This is Bob Smizik's, of the Post-Gazette, first blog post on early Monday morning. He talks about about the youthful crowds filling PNC Park and the Pirates need for a bat on either corner. I've already touched on the latter, but more to come on the Pirates' sellouts via my own hand later today.

Here is one more article with a topic that I'll also be touching on later in the day. It's about what to do with Alex Presley when Jose Tabata returns. This also comes from Bob Smizik's blog on postgazette.com.

Mike McKenry's Homerun in Perspective

Here's another article from my favorite writer, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He takes a look at the biggest homeruns since the losing season streak began in 1993, and also highlights some things that were overshadowed in Friday night's dramatic win.

No Trade Necessary for the Pirates to Contend

Most of you will roll your eyes at the title of this post and rightfully so. I certainly would love to see the Pirates make a trade to bolster a line-up with minimal power. The problem that the front office is having, as we all know, is deciding who to trade. Do you trade a part of your present in Paul Maholm who's been a key cog to the Pirates' success despite his 5-9 record? Or maybe you decide to part ways with a part of your present and future in Jose Tabata or Alex Presley? Maybe you let go of your future and one of your golden prospects in Tony Sanchez or Starling Marte?

So instead of making the tough decision, why not ignore the problem and hope it goes away? I promise that this suggestion won't sound as bad by the time you finish reading this (hopefully).

Bob Nutting: From Villain to... Savior?

If you're one of the many who hated Bob Nutting (yes that is past tense) before this season, here's an article by Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that you might want to read. Now to just sit back and hope Bob delivers...

Final Thoughts on Jaromir Jagr

Since I started this blog a few days after the Jaromir Jagr debacle I'll save myself some time and post my favorite article on this topic from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review since it sums up my feelings and then some:

Week 18 AFL American Conference Playoff Picture

A couple of fluky bounces off of the Amway Center netting gave the Pittsburgh Power their third loss in four weeks and dropped them to 8-7 overall. Unfortunately Cleveland came away with a last second win over Milwaukee. That leaves the Power scrambling for their playoff lives with just three weeks remaining. Here is what the remaining schedules look like for the American Conference's contenders heading into week 18:
